Last weekend I saw the photo in Modern Railways of the FGK TPX launch.
Then I travelled from Manchester to York and back with them.

Sunday afternoon: could have caught the 1642 from Picc., as it was
delayed with a door fault. Decided to catch the 1700 and change at
Leeds. That went OK for me, but for anyone wanting to go to South
Milford, Selby, Brough or Hull, there was no on train information on the
replacement bus service.

Friday afternoon, arrived at York platform 9 for the 1620 to Manchester
Airport. For the second time in three weeks this train was short formed.
Full and standing all the way, and just grim between Leeds and
Huddersfield, with many pax not able to get on at Leeds. No ticket
check.

Non-TPX sets seem to be appearing on TPX services regularly, although
two sets were transferred to TPX to supposedly stop the need for this.

Reminiscent of the Parkerism crumbling edge of quality. Is this just a
minor blip? How are other TPX customers getting on?

I dont use TPX a lot, but we did travel with them to Hull on the
way to Germany.

The heating in First Class was not working (in either direction) despite
the very cold weather, and on the way out the refreshment trolley person
damn near threw our complementary cups of tea at us, and spent the
journey as far as Huddersfield complaining loudly to the guard how
they were not being properly paid for the refreshments served
in first class, and rabbiting on about how lots of people were
applying for the jobs advertised at Grand Central. At Huddersfield
he cleared off and that was the end of refreshments.

On the way back, the same (very friendly) guard, and a much better
trolley man who gave us some biscuits as well as a cup of tea.

Like all these franchise changes, I doubt whether well really
see any difference.

They seem to be cancelling the short Leeds-Man Picc shuttles quite a lot
lately. On Monday the 1735 from Leeds was cancelled and on Thursday the 1159
from Manchester was cancelled

The only changes that we could see are the cheap paper initiatives and so
far all weve seen are all those that Arriva introduced (such as Engineering
work info on the website, real-time running page, monthly Keeping you in
the picture mailings etc) removed and no new ones introduced in their place

Yuk! Not suffered that one (yet).

Didnt see that person yesterday evening. Wouldnt have been able to get
through the train in any case.

Something new has happened though...... some, (just some) of Arriva
Drivers have been issued with new uniforms , in Navy Blue, and same
pullovers too, with just a small Arriva in green on the breast
pocket. I suppose this is to enable them to freely interchange
between their own services and operating TPX ones for FK and may not
be as noticeable to the public.

Apparently there was a meeting last week between Vernon (and other
management) and the Newcastle based ARRIVA staff on hire to TPX.

The message from TPX was that for Feb the reliability and Punctuality
figure were up on the previous month. Although it was soon pointed out that
as far as TPX is concerned on the ECML north of York, the service has all
but collapsed.

Mainly due to a total lack of communication all round, between ARRIVA and
TPX (with regards to the staff on hire), TPX Supervisors at York to TPX
Train Crewe at York and even the ARRIVA a staff on hire hadnt been given
the phone number of TPX control.

This has also lead to failed units spending days in platforms before someone
got round to sorting them out. Two cases were noted, firstly a 3 car set
which sat at Darlington for three days and a 2 car set that sat in Platform
9 at Newcastle for four days despite Heaton, its home depot being 3 miles up
the line.

Alot of this was news to the TPX management which says some thing about the
people below them who should be reporting to them.

One other thing that did come out at the meeting is that from December all
trains will be at least 3 cars by splitting some two car sets to make more 3
car sets.

I sent shudders down some of them at York, followed by hysterics, when
I said its about time we formed a new company Great Northern Trains
Ltd. and it would encompass Arriva and FnW operations, with FK TPX
being a third shareholder in that company. Operate as FK and
Northern, but interchange staff and resources to keep a decent service
running. That thought frightened the hell out of them :-)
Like a lot more, I am awaiting Darling and his offerings in July, to
see what he means by Regional Assemblies and local PTEs being
responsible for all the transport in their regions. If that comes
about, it will be interesting to see who operates what. One thing
being nodded at is the Scottish Parliament, they are evidently
currently very satisfied with the NX operation up there and would not
wish for Arriva to take it over, so if they have the power to do that,
what about the rest of the county, Wales, Gumpty Wumpty and Sympty?
etc etc. All will be revealed in time and we will continue to struggle
with a damned mess.
