They already use 465s to Ashford - 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 services from Charing
Cross via Tonbridge and balancing workings including one via Maidstone East.
Many Maidstone East terminating trains are 465s and they ran to Tunbridge Wells
until the recent change in the timetable. Remember at one time express gear
ratio EPBs had peak duties to Ramsgate.

ISTR that in the 1960s there were various Summer trains which ran as an
all-stations suburban train from Charing Cross to Dartford, and was then
extended to Ramsgate, and these would have been formed of, or include EPBs
without the benefit of express gear. And 2HAPs, which were only one step up
from EPBs (First Class section and toilets, but otherwise indistinguishable
from an EPB for most passengers) wandered all over Kent.

I have seen and travelled on SWD EPB - which were not express ratio - at
to Bournemouth on several occasions.

They used to appear on the summer dated Waterloo to Bournemouth
timetabled fast reliefs that used to run ahaead of the regular 00:30
91 during peak loading periods on summer Satudays (but not the ~10:28
ex Waterloo which was in theory a Rep usually a 73).

I have no idea if any were booked EPB but it was certainly more than an
odd one or two times. Somewhere I have got pics of an 8car Bullied body
EPB at both Southampton and Bournemouth with headcode 91.

As Peter Beale has already said, EPBs went anywhere on the
electrified network (and on one embarrassing occasion off it with
yours truly at the back). Although not an everyday occurrence, an
EPB at somewhere like Ramsgate or Dover was not especially
noteworthy.

Express gear allowed speeds up to 90mph and was fitted to all EP
braked stock except EPBs. EPBs had suburban gear and a maximum
speed of 75mph.

The express gear EPBs were so upgraded so that they could work in a
12 car train with the other 8 cars CEP or VEP and at up to 90mph.

Except in an emergency, you couldnt run a train of mixed suburban /
express gear with more than 50% express gear, even if you kept to
75mph.

EPB-EPB-CEP was OK, but not EPB-CEP-CEP.

That was fairly easy to spot. Harder was something like
HAP-HAP-EPB-HAP, and mistakes were sometimes made, especially at
Gillingham.
