A signalling failure at West Hampstead caused major delays to MML
services in/out of St Pancras this evening peak. Arrived at 16:50 to
travel on the 17:15 to Leicester. A huge crowd on the concourse
awaited announcements - clearly today showed how dangerous the shorter
concourse is compared to the old one during times of major disruption.
A HST left at 17:10 calling at all stations, then the 16:55 left.
The Master Cutler left about 20 late but arrived into Leicester 40
late after following other trains en-route. Great crew though - full
at-seat service and many seats available yet the poor pax who boarded
the previous two trains had to stand.

We saw one guy get arrested at St Pancras after violently venting
their anger on a MML staff during the disruption. It is a shame that
idiots like him do such actions on staff who really are in the same
situation as us passengers.

As for Sunday - got a text message from the wonderful MML online
system (registered for their delay alerts but none to be seen for many
weeks), that drivers are striking over pay and no MML service AT ALL
this Sunday. Other TOCs are not affected. Whilst customers at
principal MML stations can use alternate routes (Leicester to
Peterborough or Birmingham) to get to London, the poor customers at
Market Harborough, Kettering and Wellingborough will be stranded.

Definitely not a good few days, but at least we have the Meridians to
look forward to in May.

The drivers arent striking. Sunday working is voluntary and they are not
volunteering because ASLEF have called meetings over a failure to agree with
management on pay.

Youll be lucky. Crew training has only just started.

I thought it was more along the lines of Sunday being outside the
working week, but if youre rostered to work it then youre supposed to
unless you can find someone to work the turn for you?

For what its worth, the current base salaries for the ex-InterCity TOCs
(according to the ASLEF site) are:

Anglia: Ł28,500
First Great Western: Ł27,967
Gatwick Express: Ł28,215
GNER: Ł36,020
Midland Mainline: Ł30,000
Virgin Cross Country: Ł34,516
Virgin West Coast: Ł34,516

Mean: Ł31,391 (inc. GatEx)
Ł31,919 (exc. GatEx)

So theyre just under Ł1,400 under the mean of the former InterCity TOCs
including Gatwick Express, just over Ł1,900 under the mean of the former
InterCity TOCs excluding Gatwick Express.

Cya,

Barry

Thanks Barry - yes, I gather they are asking for something in the region of
30% - not just parity.

Depends on the TOC. Some TOCs have that agreement, some dont.

And even those that do are unlikely to be able to force drivers to
work if (for example) that rostered Sunday falls in the middle of
their two weeks rostered summer leave.

That sounds like either
a bargaining chip for a serious change in conditions (one Sunday in
two as part of week, maybe?) or
a load of codswallop.

Take your pick, but bear in mind that ASLEF (and its membership) is
not suicidally stupid, whatever Richard may think.

On occasions I may think otherwise Ross! (but well talk about this
privately)

There is a feeling that with the review of the railways in progress now
might be a good time to flex muscles a little - with both railway unions
involved in action of some sort at the moment - and of course for one of
them if you are in the middle of some fracas at HQ it is useful to deflect
news coverage elsewhere!

Lets just hope both sides stay sensible over this.

As I understand it, MML offered the drivers 20% extra for putting sunday
duties as part of the normal roster, this was agreed. MML have now withdrawn
this.
